Want Fidelity’s advertised 2% cash back? Count that value only if you intend to redeem rewards into an eligible Fidelity account—statement credit is a different redemption option with different value.
This approach fits someone who already wants rewards deposited at Fidelity. If that destination is inconvenient, the headline percentage has skipped the part that matters to you.
Earning points and getting cash are separate steps
The Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card earns 2 points per $1 in eligible net purchases while your card account is in good standing. The advertised 2% value applies when those points become a deposit into an eligible Fidelity account.
For a hypothetical $1,000 in eligible net purchases, that means 2,000 points and $20 in deposit value—equivalent to 1¢ per point. That is reward value from the example spending, not a reason to spend more.
The catch: travel, merchandise, gift cards, and statement credits are also available, but Fidelity says their redemption value differs. Fidelity’s public product page does not specify those conversion rates; check your card’s rewards program rules before assuming a statement credit would also be worth $20. The percentage comes with a destination.
Check the receiving account before applying
Fidelity lists brokerage and Cash Management accounts among eligible destinations. Its FAQs also list most nonretirement registrations, Traditional, Roth, Rollover, and SEP IRAs, Fidelity HSA accounts, Fidelity Charitable Giving Accounts, and Fidelity-managed 529 plans.
“Most” is doing some work there. Verify your particular account registration with Fidelity rather than assuming every account qualifies.
The receiving account must already be open and funded; rewards cannot provide its initial funding. IRA and 529 deposits also remain subject to contribution eligibility and limits—an eligible account type does not automatically make every deposit eligible.
Automation helps after the destination is settled
Fidelity’s FAQ states a minimum of 1 point for an eligible-account cash deposit. You can set up automatic monthly redemptions by adding eligible receiving accounts, or accumulate points and redeem on demand.
Automatic conversion happens at month-end. That can make rewards less work to babysit, provided the receiving account is appropriate for the deposits.
Practical verdict
Use this approach if you want cash rewards deposited into an eligible, already-funded Fidelity account. Verify the exact registration and any contribution restrictions before applying, especially if your intended destination is an IRA or 529 plan.
Skip this approach if you want statement credits and are counting on the advertised 2% without checking their value. Choose the destination first; count the rewards second.
