Practical Recommendation

If you spend real money on dining, groceries, and flights, this is an easy keeper. The $100 hotel discount through Citi Travel is simple and offsets the fee fast if you book one $500+ stay a year.

You'll get the best value by moving points to airline and hotel partners for award bookings. If you'd rather take straight cash every time, the math is tougher—still solid, just not magic. Bottom line: travelers who transfer points win here.

Perks

  • Earning structure (quick recap) – 10x hotels, car rentals, attractions via Citi Travel; 3x air travel and other hotel purchases; 3x restaurants; 3x supermarkets; 3x gas & EV charging; 1x everything else. Useful mix for most travelers.
  • Point transfers – Move ThankYou points to airline and hotel partners (examples include JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Choice Hotels, The Leading Hotels of the World). Great when you can find saver awards; check partner list before planning. — See transfer partners

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption (Common Carrier) – Reimburses nonrefundable prepaid travel if you cancel or cut a trip short for covered reasons (e.g., illness). Limits: up to $5,000 per covered trip and $10,000 per eligible account per 12 months. Must charge the common-carrier fare to the card (or card + points). Good safety net for flights.
  • Trip Delay – If your common-carrier trip is delayed more than 6 hours, covers reasonable expenses (meals, hotel, toiletries). Limits: up to $500 per trip, 2 claims per 12 months. Helpful for overnight delays.
  • Lost or Damaged Luggage – For checked or carry-on luggage damaged or lost by the carrier. Limits: up to $3,000 per trip (specific caps apply in some states). Good for replacing essentials if the airline drops the ball.
  • Rental Car Coverage (MasterRental) – Collision/damage waiver when you pay with the card and decline the rental company's coverage. Secondary coverage in your country of residence; primary abroad. Covers actual repair or cash value and certain loss-of-use fees; rentals up to 31 days; excludes luxury/exotic classes. Saves you from buying the counter waiver.
  • Purchase Protection – New items bought with the card are covered for damage or theft within 90 days, up to $10,000 per incident and $50,000 per account per year. Good for accidental drops and quick "oops" moments.
