Practical Recommendation

Great starter cash card if you're willing to tap an app four times a year. You get 5% on rotating categories (cap $1,500/quarter, then 1%), and Cashback Match doubles all cash back from your first 12 months—paid after your first year.

The one thing that's actually new: Capital One now owns Discover, and as of July 27, 2026 these accounts moved to the Capital One website and app. The card keeps its name, number, and $0 annual fee, the quarterly calendar still runs, and Cashback Match is still on the table. You also picked up a standing 5% on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and on Capital One Entertainment tickets—plus access to Capital One Offers.

If you hate tracking quarters, use it only when the category fits (groceries, gas, restaurants, etc.) and keep a flat 2% card for everything else. No annual fee and no foreign transaction fees help it stay in the drawer until a 5% quarter shows up.

Perks

  • 5% rotating categories (activation required) – Earn 5% in the featured categories each quarter on up to $1,500 in purchases; everything else earns 1%. You must activate each quarter (takes seconds). Plan big purchases when your category is "on."
  • 5% Capital One Travel & Entertainment (new) – Since the July 2026 move to Capital One, the card earns a standing 5% on hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, and activities booked through Capital One Travel, plus tickets booked through Capital One Entertainment. This sits on top of the rotating calendar and doesn't eat the $1,500 quarterly cap.
  • Cashback Match (year one) – All cash back you earn in your first 12 months as a new cardmember is automatically matched dollar for dollar. There's no cap and no minimum spend, and you can redeem during the year and still get the full match at year-end. Capital One has kept this offer running after the transition.
  • Capital One Offers – Accounts now get access to Capital One's merchant deals portal, which is a small but genuinely free extra you didn't have before.
  • Cool Card Designs – You can still choose from multiple card designs when you apply (purely cosmetic). Options range from sleek minimalist patterns to vibrant artistic designs and seasonal themes. It's a nice touch that lets you personalize your wallet.
  • No foreign transaction fees – No ~3% surcharge on international purchases (Discover network acceptance still varies by country, so always carry a backup).

Protections

  • Fraud liability – $0 liability for unauthorized charges; useful if your number is skimmed or stolen. (Standard across issuers, but still good to have.)
  • What's not included – This card still doesn't carry the common card insurances: no trip delay or cancellation coverage, no rental car collision waiver, no purchase protection, no extended warranty. The Capital One transition didn't add any of these. Plan accordingly and use another card when you need those protections.

2026 Categories by Quarter

Here's the actual 2026 rotation. Categories change every year, so always activate and confirm the current list before a big purchase.

How the math works: 5% on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter after you activate ($75 max back per quarter; then 1%). In year one, Cashback Match doubles whatever you actually earned.

Q1 2026 (Jan–Mar): grocery stores • wholesale clubs • select streaming services

  • How to use it – Shift weekly supermarket runs here, and note that this was a rare quarter where warehouse clubs counted too. Add your streaming bills to the card.
  • Watch-outs – Superstores like Walmart and Target usually don't code as "grocery." Streaming must bill the service directly (app-store billing can miss).

Q2 2026 (Apr–Jun): restaurants • home improvement stores

  • How to use it – Spring projects and eating out. If you were replacing a water heater or redoing a deck, this was the window to put it on the card.
  • Watch-outs – Restaurants inside another merchant (a club, a hotel, a stadium) often code as that merchant instead. Third-party delivery apps can code as "services."

Q3 2026 (Jul–Sep): gas stations & EV charging • transportation & flights • drugstores

  • How to use it – This is the current quarter. Fuel up here, buy airfare directly from the airline, and run rideshares, transit, and pharmacy pickups through it before September 30.
  • Watch-outs – Warehouse-club fuel stations frequently code as the club, not a gas station. Online travel agencies can code oddly; paying the airline directly is safest.

Q4 2026 (Oct–Dec): not yet announced

  • How to use it – Discover typically posts the Q4 list around September 1. Q4 has historically leaned toward holiday shopping (Amazon, Target, Walmart, and digital wallets), but treat that as a guess, not a plan.
  • Watch-outs – Don't pre-buy anything on the assumption a category will repeat. Check the calendar and activate before you shop.

Cap check: Maxing the $1,500 cap each quarter earns $300 for the year at 5%. With year-one Match, that becomes $600 (if you actually earn it).

Gotchas & Fine Print

  • Quarterly cap math – 5% applies to the first $1,500 in purchases in the active categories each quarter (max $75 back per quarter, before any Match). After that, the same purchases earn 1%. Activation required.
  • Cashback Match timing – The match posts after your first 12 billing cycles close; account must be open and in good standing. There's no minimum spend and you can redeem during the year.
  • Your account lives at Capital One now – As of July 27, 2026, Discover it accounts are serviced on Capital One's website and app. Your card number, expiration, security code, name, and branding didn't change, and nothing was required of you. But if you had the Discover app bookmarked or autopay set up on Discover's site, check that it followed you over.
  • A few redemption options went away – You can no longer redeem cash back toward your minimum payment, and Pay with Rewards through Apple Pay is gone. Gift card redemptions now carry a $25 minimum. Statement credits still work, but you may need to re-enroll in automatic redemptions.
