Practical Recommendation

If you stay at Marriott a few times a year and want a no-annual-fee way to earn points, this is the painless option. Automatic Silver status and 5 elite night credits nudge you toward higher status, and the hotel earn rate is solid for a $0 card.

Outside of Marriott stays, the 2x categories are fine, but many general travel or cash-back cards can beat them. Bottom line: keep it for Marriott spend and as a fee-free way to pad points; look elsewhere for everyday earnings.

Perks

  • Earning rates (detailed) – 3x at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy; 2x at grocery stores; 2x on rideshare and select food delivery; 2x on select streaming and internet/cable/phone services; 1x everything else. Points transfer automatically to your Bonvoy account each statement cycle.
  • Automatic Silver Elite status – You get Silver each calendar year as a cardmember (10% points bonus on stays, late checkout when available). Simple set-and-forget status if you stay a bit.
  • 5 Elite Night Credits each year – Deposited annually to help you climb to higher tiers. Helpful if you're already close to Gold or Platinum.
  • Pay Yourself Back (travel statement credits using points) – Redeem Bonvoy points toward qualifying travel purchases made directly with airlines or at Marriott hotels, up to $750 in redemptions per year, at a fixed value of $100 per 12,500 points (0.8¢/point). Good safety valve when cash beats an award.
  • No foreign transaction fees – Useful for international trips; you won't pay the usual 3% many $0-fee cards charge.

Protections

  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – If a common-carrier trip is delayed 12+ hours or overnight, get up to $500 per covered traveler for meals and lodging. Great for weather meltdowns.
  • Baggage Delay Insurance – If bags are delayed 6+ hours, get up to $100/day for 5 days for essentials (toiletries, clothing).
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 per covered traveler for lost or stolen checked/carry-on baggage.
  • Purchase Protection – Eligible new purchases covered for damage or theft for 120 days, up to $500 per item.
  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver – Coverage for theft/damage to your rental car when you pay with the card and decline the rental agency's CDW; generally secondary in the U.S., primary in many countries abroad.
