Practical Recommendation

This card is built for people who spend a lot at the big boxes. Pick two retailers for 6% and one everyday category for 3%, then set a reminder to re-confirm choices each quarter. There's a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95, so make sure your 6% categories actually see ~$1,600+/year to clear the fee.

If you don't like tracking quarter caps or changing retailers, a flat-rate 2% card is easier. If you're okay with mild upkeep and shop Amazon/Target/Walmart regularly, the 6% buckets can add up fast.

Perks

  • Earning, at a glance – 6% at two chosen retailers (up to $1,500/quarter combined); 3% in one category (gas & ev charging, wholesale clubs, or bills & utilities) up to $1,500/quarter; 1.5% everywhere else. You must enroll each quarter; changes can take up to 3 business days to apply.
  • Retailer list (24 options) – Includes Amazon, Walmart, Target, Apple, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Ikea, Wayfair, and more. Pick the two you actually use, not the fanciest names.
  • Rewards Travel Center bump – 5.5% back on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked through the U.S. Bank portal. Use it when prices match or beat booking direct; otherwise default to your 6%/3% lanes.
  • Shopping Deals portal – Extra cash-back offers at 1,100+ online stores; stack with your card's base earn for better returns.
  • Real-Time Rewards – Optional text-to-redeem lets you wipe purchases with cash back right after they post. It's instant and keeps things simple.
  • Redemption options – Statement credit, deposit to U.S. Bank checking/savings, U.S. Bank Rewards Card, or merchant gift cards. Cash rewards don't expire while the account is open.
  • Foreign transaction fee – 3%. Skip this card abroad and use one with no foreign fees.

Protections

  • Rental car insurance (secondary CDW) – Covers damage or theft of the rental car when you pay with the card; secondary to your own auto policy; not liability coverage. See your Guide to Benefits.
  • Purchase protection – Helps with theft or accidental damage on eligible items for a short window after purchase; limits/exclusions apply.
  • Extended warranty – Adds extra warranty time on eligible purchases beyond the manufacturer's coverage.
  • Travel accident & assistance – Basic Visa Signature assistance benefits; see your Guide to Benefits for details.

Gotchas to Know

  • Quarterly caps & re-enrollment – 6% and 3% rates drop to 1.5% after $1,500 per bucket each quarter; you must re-select categories every quarter.
  • Subsidiaries & third-party delivery – Purchases through subsidiaries or delivery services may not count for 6%/3% and default to 1.5%.
  • Gas & EV charging caveat – Purchases at discount stores/wholesale clubs/groceries don't count for 3% gas; they earn 1.5%.
